The GRID & Ubiquitous Computing Group is a part of the Information and Communication Technologies department of the University of Applied Sciences of Western Switzerland, Fribourg (HES-SO/EIA-FR). This group is active on topics related to parallel and distributed systems such as Grid computing and was partner of the CoreGRID NoE. More specifically activities of the group are mainly focusing on the following aspects: \begin{itemize} \item Programming models and tool for GRID and distributed systems. \item Resource management for GRID systems. This presentation will focus on these two aspects of the research activities of the GRID & Ubiquitous Computing Group. Two projects will be presented \item POP-C++: a comprehensive object-oriented environment for developing HPC applications on the Grid. \item SmartGRID: a grid scheduling framework based on swarm intelligence for the scope of serving the overall GRID as a whole \end{itemize}
